“The things i write here”

“The things i write here”,  2020. Oil on linen, 137×137 cm.

This work is one of a series about artists and their work. The inspiration here is twofold. The main figure is after a 1964 photo portrait by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alberto Giacometti di Stampa, in Yves Bonnefoy, Giacometti, 1981.
The title and writing right, ‘Sometimes it crossed my mind that the things I write here are nothing other than images of hat prisoners and sailors tattoo on their skin’, George Seferis, Logbook II, c.1940.
This expresses the doubts that besiege sensitive creative minds about their work and their insecurities. Giacometti – superb artist as he was and well acknowledged – had many such doubts.
