Wolfgang Tillmans artistic work is based on irrepressible curiosity, intense preparatory research and a continuous engagement with the technical and aesthetic potential of the photographic medium. His visual language is characterized by close observation that opens up a profoundly human approach to our environment. Familiarity and empathy, friendship, community and closeness can be seen and felt in his images.
It was love at first sight, as as I read and reviewed his work I saw myself reflected in my own. It is the interpersonal with all its flaws that fascinates us. He sees as a strength the acceptance of the fragility that defines us as individuals and our interpersonal relationships.
It uses failures, ruptures and fragility as an impetus to develop new processes.
It points to the imperfect nature of our lives and reveals unsuspected perspectives on the materiality of life.
It is for this reason that I continue and will continue (work in progress always) to make this series of photographs as a tribute. Because in a way we are looking for the same thing, because we believe in the strength of the images and in the open discourse that is produced by joining one with the other.
