We find in all of Alexandra Riss’ performances a choreography where the body punctuates a repetitive movement, sometimes in vain, often in effort, like a ballet by which the body of the dancer is both tool and work. But the body always forms an ambush that prevents the artist from accomplishing his project without suffering.
A hybrid and performative object, La Vestale approaches the borders and limits of its own nature. Compressed in a glass slipper, a replica of his anatomy, the artist must adapt to the new constraints of this impossible object. For Alexandra Riss, putting the object into action is essential because it reinforces its singular character. A poetic fragility in which the artist and the piece merge. Once the performance is complete, the object leaves its status as a symbolic instrument to switch to the sculptural field.
