“French Kiss”

“French Kiss”, 2020. Series of seven boxes, porcelain biscuit, silicone, 9 x 6 x 4.5 cm.

Having become a common expression of the French language, La madeleine de Proust illustrates the involuntary nature of reminiscence. Around the world, the reputation of the cupcake with a humpbacked shell-shaped back is well established. A French gastronomic product, the madeleine is often associated with finesse and sensuality. Alexandra Riss combines this delicacy with the reputation of the languorous kiss that English speakers have given to the French Kiss. Starting from certain passages from Marcel Proust’s first novel: richly sensual / I brought to my lips / the grooved valve of a scallop shell, the artist produced the famous madeleine in porcelain biscuit. Inside it is housed the silicone molding of the artist’s lips, giving the buyer the opportunity to kiss them at will way.
