Massal Ann
Née en 1977 à Paris, Ann Massal vit et travaille à Paris.
Elle fait carrière dans le monde de la beauté & de la mode avant d’entamer un cursus de photographie à la Saint Martins School à Londres. Elle poursuit sa formation avec l’Atelier Smedsby auprès de JH Engström et Margot Wallard. Sa pratique photographique s’accélère alors, JH Engström la choisissant pour l’édition de Photopaper n°18 comme la photographe à suivre. Dans la foulée, elle est finaliste des Kassel et Istanbul Dummy Awards et publie son premier livre, The Eye of The Cyclops avec Kehrer Verlag en 2019 (médaille d’argent 2019 du prix du livre de photographie conceptuelle).
Son travail privilégie les sujets intimes et tente d’en proposer une approche sensible et ambiguë pour donner au spectateur un autre regard. Elle se joue pour cela bien souvent du médium -ne s’interdisant aucune expérimentation- mais refusant de retoucher les images afin d’en dégager la substantifique moelle. Son travail a été exposé à Helsinki Photo Festival, Copenhague (Galerie NW), Incheon (Tribowl), Paris (Photo Saint Germain & Galerie Echo 119), Barcelone (Musée de la Photographie Catalane)…
Elle est l’une des gagnantes de Circulations 2023 et son travail sera exposé dans ce cadre au 104 à Paris à partir d’Avril 2023. Ann Massal est représentée par Maison Contemporain depuis Décembre 2022.
Born in 1977 in Paris, Ann Massal lives and works in Paris.
She made a career in the world of beauty & fashion before starting a photography course at Saint Martins School in London. She continued her training with Atelier Smedsby with JH Engström and Margot Wallard. Her photographic practice then accelerated, JH Engström choosing her for the edition of Photopaper n°18 as the photographer to follow. In the process, she was a finalist for the Kassel and Istanbul Dummy Awards and published her first book, The Eye of The Cyclops with Kehrer Verlag in 2019 (2019 silver medal of the conceptual photography book prize).
Her work favors intimate subjects and tries to offer a sensitive and ambiguous approach to give the viewer another look. For this, she very often plays with the medium - not refraining from any experimentation - but refusing to retouch the images in order to release their substantive marrow. Her work has been exhibited at Helsinki Photo Festival, Copenhagen (Galerie NW), Incheon (Tribowl), Paris (Photo Saint Germain & Galerie Echo 119), Barcelona (Museum of Catalan Photography)…
She is one of the winners of Circulations 2023 and her work will be exhibited in this context at 104 in Paris from April 2023. Ann Massal has been represented by Maison Contemporain since December 2022.
