I studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle upon Tyne and have worked on various projects throughout my career from bespoke furniture making to teaching, painting being the one constant. The first big influence on my work as a young painter was the observational painting of artists associated with the Euston Road School such as William Brooker and Euan Uglow. Paradoxically my interest in abstract painting grew soon afterwards and ever since I have tried to resolve these two different approaches in my painting. Expressing light through colour and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene. I am not a subject specific painter, whether I am working on still life, portraiture or landscape, I am always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter.

J'ai étudié l'art à Blackpool et Newcastle upon Tyne et j'ai travaillé sur divers projets tout au long de ma carrière, de la fabrication de meubles sur mesure à l'enseignement, la peinture étant la seule constante. La première grande influence sur mon travail en tant que jeune peintre a été la peinture d'observation d'artistes associés à la Euston Road School tels que William Brooker et Euan Uglow. Paradoxalement, mon intérêt pour la peinture abstraite s'est développé peu de temps après et depuis, j'ai essayé de résoudre ces deux approches différentes dans ma peinture. L'expression de la lumière à travers la couleur et l'agencement des formes sont aussi importantes que la représentation de la scène. Je ne suis pas un peintre de sujet spécifique, que je travaille sur la nature morte, le portrait ou le paysage, j'essaie toujours de découvrir de quoi parle la peinture; l'objet n'est pas vraiment le sujet.
