Ian Hoskin – Artist Statement.
My enjoyment of photography originates from when I was very young, watching my Grandfather processing films and then printing in his makeshift Darkroom.
Subsequently I have always had a fascination with the photographic process; originally the traditional darkroom and now also digital.
I was born in Newcastle-Upon- Tyne in 1955 and could not wait to get away. My school career was less than successful and consequently I decided in the mid 70’s to travel, initially to Afghanistan and subsequently, the following year to India. On this second journey I took an old Ilford camera and on the advice of a friend, a bag of Tri-X film. From there on I became hooked on the image making process and subsequently I studied for a Fine Art Degree in Sheffield, graduating in 1981. I went on to work as a freelance photographer for BBC Television, whilst continuing my own Photographic projects.
Photography of any type has a magical feel for me because there is a transmogrification that can occur between the moment of exposure and the finished print: Photography fixes permanently that moment and concentrates our attention on subject matter that could be seen as relatively mundane or might have otherwise been overlooked and this forms the base line for my practice.
Mon plaisir pour la photographie remonte à ma plus tendre enfance, lorsque j'observais mon grand-père traiter des films puis tirer dans sa chambre noire de fortune. Par la suite j'ai toujours eu une fascination pour le procédé photographique ; à l'origine la chambre noire traditionnelle et maintenant aussi numérique.
Je suis né à Newcastle-Upon-Tyne en 1955 et j'avais hâte de partir. Ma carrière scolaire n'a pas été couronnée de succès et j'ai donc décidé au milieu des années 70 de voyager, d'abord en Afghanistan, puis l'année suivante en Inde. Lors de ce deuxième voyage, j'ai pris un vieil appareil photo Ilford et, sur les conseils d'un ami, un sac de film Tri-X. À partir de là, je suis devenu accro au processus de création d'images et j'ai ensuite étudié pour obtenir un diplôme en beaux-arts à Sheffield, où j'ai obtenu mon diplôme en 1981. J'ai ensuite travaillé comme photographe indépendant pour BBC Television, tout en poursuivant mes propres projets photographiques.
La photographie de tout type a une sensation magique pour moi car il y a une transmogrification qui peut se produire entre le moment de l'exposition et l'impression finale : la photographie fixe en permanence ce moment et concentre notre attention sur un sujet qui pourrait être considéré comme relativement banal ou qui pourrait avoir autrement été négligé et cela constitue la ligne de base de ma pratique.
