Gerstel Rotem
Rotem Gerstel est née en Israël en 1988. Elle vit et travaille actuellement à Paris (Ateliers Poush Manifesto). Sa pratique artistique multidisciplinaire varie entre la sculpture, la vidéo, l’installation, le dessin et le son.
Elle est diplômée du BFA du département de céramique et de verre de l’Académie d’Art Bezalel à Jérusalem, du département audiovisuel (VAV) de l’Académie Gerrit Rietveld d’Amsterdam et du programme de troisième cycle européen en Arts sonores de l’Académie d’Art KASK à Gand.
Elle a participé à plusieurs résidences artistiques telles que la Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris, DOC! à Paris et le Werkraum Warteck pp à Bâle.
Elle a présenté son travail lors de plusieurs expositions collectives en Europe et en Israël. En 2018, Rotem Gerstel et Simone Etter ont créé la station de radio itinérante THE REAL, axée sur la transmission des activités artistiques et des actions formées dans les résidences d’artistes.
…Le principe clé de mon travail est l’insaisissable, qui nous échappe. Je questionne le « sas » qui se situe entre la vie et l’art, en investiguant les possibilités matérielles qu’il offre. Et par cela, je maintiens vive la suspension entre les objets artistiques et la réalité.
Dans mon studio, je travaille principalement le dessin, la vidéo, le son et la sculpture tout en utilisant des espaces spécifiques et des matériaux extraits de mon environnement. En manipulant des objets et des espaces indéfinis, je leur accorde un renouvellement de contexte et de visibilité et ainsi créer un système solaire indépendant formés de planètes singulières.
Mon approche est davantage méthodologique que conceptuelle.
J’observe en permanence mon habitat, détourner et collectionnant de images aléatoires et les reconstruire dans mon atelier. Elles m’ instruisent de créer une sphère parallèle constituée de ces media apparemment séparés.
Ce faisant, je questionne comment l’information circule entre moi-même, l’objet l’espace et l’observateur. En formatant et en créant ces environnements uniques, je cherche à exposer la polysémie du terme « médium ».
Les parois des objets que je travaille les délimitent et les soutiennent dans leur forme, les rendant reconnaissables. Les questions imminentes de perméabilité dans la communication m’amène à contempler l’impossibilité du langage, la synchronicité et l’asynchronie.
Cet état d’incertitude, de non-reconnaissance d’un objet, avant de formaliser la relation que l’on instaure avec lui est prégnante dans mes installations, il apparait comme un « troisième personnage » qui se formalise entre moi et l’objet.
Rotem Gerstel was born in Israel in 1988. She currently lives and works in Paris (Ateliers Poush Manifesto). Her multidisciplinary artistic practice varies between sculpture, video, installation, drawing and sound.
She graduated from the BFA of the Ceramics and Glass Department of the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, the Audiovisual Department (VAV) of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the European Postgraduate Program in Sound Arts at the 'KASK Art Academy in Ghent.
She has participated in several artistic residencies such as the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, DOC! in Paris and the Werkraum Warteck pp in Basel.
She has presented her work in several group exhibitions in Europe and Israel. In 2018, Rotem Gerstel and Simone Etter created the traveling radio station THE REAL, focused on the transmission of artistic activities and actions formed in artist residences.
... The key principle of my work is the elusive, which escapes us. I question the "airlock" that lies between life and art, investigating the material possibilities it offers. And through this, I keep alive the suspension between artistic objects and reality.
In my studio, I mainly work with drawing, video, sound and sculpture while using specific spaces and materials extracted from my environment. By manipulating indefinite objects and spaces, I grant them a renewal of context and visibility and thus create an independent solar system made up of singular planets.
My approach is more methodological than conceptual.
I constantly observe my habitat, diverting and collecting random images and reconstructing them in my studio. They instruct me to create a parallel sphere made up of these seemingly separate media.
In doing so, I question how information flows between myself, the space object, and the observer. By formatting and creating these unique environments, I seek to expose the polysemy of the term “medium”.
The walls of the objects I work delimit and support them in their form, making them recognizable. The looming issues of permeability in communication lead me to contemplate the impossibility of language, synchronicity and asynchrony.
This state of uncertainty, of non-recognition of an object, before formalizing the relationship that we establish with it is significant in my installations, it appears as a "third character" which is formalized between me and the object. .
