de Nobel Borg
Born in Zeist, Netherlands in 1965
Mainly self-taught artist
I choose to work with any material that can be called paint and leaves a mark. I’ve collected earth and shells of which I make pigments, I use charcoal & oil paint sticks, nice and greasy. Sometimes I even use tar or shoe-polish or dust or cement or I stick flotsam onto the canvas, but my main medium is oil paint because it smells so good and gives me time coz the thickness of oil paint leaves time to think where to go...and maybe change it, or maybe even mix it with another medium so it acts different from how it “should”. That’s how I experiment and pretend I’m an alchemist as well. I use my canvas as a musical instrument, drumming the paint in isn’t place. Playing the cello with the backside of a brush. Loving the mixing and smearing and scraping and dancing around the mess I make. I don’t work in layers as such but do tend to paint over what I just painted or wrote, words or lines that stick in my head onto the canvas and when the work is done only 2 letters might have survived. It leaves space for wonder there…what is it I’m seeing?
The same with colors or spaces it’s almost impossible for me to not touch every inch of the canvas, yet that’s something I really like about my work, it looks simple. I like it if you can see that whatever the image represents it’s made of paint. Give me a thousand canvases and I’ll paint you the world over & over. The Freedom not to really know what I’ll come up up with makes it all the more fun for me. Painting is my road from the world around me to the unknown and my way out…
I’m in love with paint, I don’t think subject matter, I think color and line, composition, song, the world around me, music, memory, time, dream...poetry. I paint fast though, coz I live now!
